Grades 3-6 Titles in the Field Guides for Kids series (4 new titles) are excellent resources for young scientists and researchers interested in the world around them. The books all begin with a well-organized table of contents, important definitions, and a breakdown of standard page features, like where to find an entry's common and scientific name (or category) and advice for spotting plants, animals, or objects in the wild. Sidebars and fun facts provide interesting trivia and history as well as background information on scientists and researchers who have contributed to certain subjects. Flowers and Plants gathers an interesting array of flora, ranging from vines, mosses, and succulents to aquatic plants, wildflowers, and herbs. Layouts are clean and visually appealing, with large color photographs and illustrations and easy-to-follow text. A glossary, suggestions for further readings, and online resources are included. Eye-catching and interesting, this series will get kids exploring.

Gr 5-8-Nature lovers will rejoice with these trimmed down, visual field guides. As one expects, there are scientific as well as common names featured in each, but there are also more candid images that match a real-life visual experience. Helpful tips are alongside background information about different species for easy identification. The series includes household and common uses for the plants, which makes these books feel topical yet not heavy with subject matter as some field guides for older teens can be. VERDICT This is a delightful match that pairs applied science through experiences and classroom knowledge in a way that will bring joy to middle school students.
