Seven ordinary hotel employees ranging from management to a bellboy await a single code word that will trigger a violent assassination attempt on a hotel guest. These same seven employees will cause the entire attempt to hilariously crash and burn. Over a period of two years, they each find themselves being debriefed by a mysterious government organization about the events of that day in an attempt to find who was actually at fault. The transcripts of their interviews are comedic and satirical as each employee shares their perspective of what happened that day. The interviews also interestingly reveal the complexities and desperation that drove each employee to fulfill their mission. Whitton pens a debut that is both comedic and introspective, skewering the attempts of an organization trying to find out what went wrong with the group of people it tried so hard to manipulate. This one is perfect for fans of quirky novels like those of Fredrik Backman and Jennifer Egan.
