Day of the Dead

Preschool-G These new books in the Holidays series provide a basic introduction to global celebrations for young readers. Each book begins with a chapter introducing the holiday and featuring historical information on the holiday's origins. The text is large and easy to read, and the photos are adequate and generally accompanied by interesting facts. However, the books' layout often leaves surplus white space that is not particularly appealing. Though the emphasis is on history and celebration, Day of the Dead could frighten some younger or sensitive children, and the book's suggestion that readers try observing parts of this religious holiday feels awkward.
