Sometimes, breaking the rules is the best thing you can do, especially when the rules don't allow you to be yourself.
For Nadine Rostraver, fourth grade comes with peer pressure and new social rules. For one thing, girls aren't supposed to hang out with boys anymore. So where does that leave Nadine and her best friend Nick?
Then Summer Crawford arrives at their school and Nadine's life goes from bad to worse! Nadine loses her job on the class newspaper and gets in serious trouble with her teacher. But Summer has always been a free spirit, and together Nadine, Nick, and Summer realize that life is a lot more fun if you march to the beat of your own drum.
Leslie Bulion's sensitive, realistic look at adolescence will resonate with young readers who will recognize themselves and their own dilemmas in her well-drawn characters and their responses to a complicated world.

Gr 3-5-In this novel, Nadie is caught up in feelings and social situations that will seem real to kids her age. Ever since she entered the upper elementary school in fourth grade, it seems as though the rules have changed: boys and girls can't be friendsat least in public. Nadie and Nick have been neighbors and best friends forever, but now they have to hide their relationship to avoid being teased. On top of that, new girl Summer comes on the scene and causes more tension between the genders as she becomes the class clown's nemesis as well as Nadie's pal. But Summer's antics and competition with Owen can be trouble, and Nadie's guilt by association causes a chain of troublesome events that make her yearn for the way things used to be. Readers will empathize with the protagonist and may see themselves in her as she struggles with peer relationships. Refreshingly, Nadie develops her own "rules" that include being mature enough to stick to and form her own friendships in the end, bringing together her entire classroom. Adults include an inspiring teacher and a supportive, at-home father."Jennifer Cogan, Bucks County Free Library, Doylestown, PA"

Nadie has always been best friends with Nick, but upon reaching upper-elementary school, they're faced with a rule: girls and boys cannot be friends. Life becomes even more complicated when new girl Summer ignores this rule. Nadie's narration is much too polished and mature to be convincing as a fourth grader's, but the realistic scenario teaches solid lessons about friendship and individuality.
